Tanya’s Top Ten List!

Tanya (a.k.a Tawni)  is the Supplement Department Manager at Perelandra. She fuels her busy New York City lifestyle with delicious plant based meals, nutritional supplements and vegan cupcakes. She finds balance teaching and practicing power yoga, meditating, laughing with friends and studying yoga texts. We asked Tanya to compile a list of her top ten must haves at Perelandra – here they are!

1. Leafy Green: Olivia’s Organics Baby Arugula

One of my favorite ways to prepare this bitter green is in pesto. ½ C olive oil. ½ C walnuts. 2-3 cloves of garlic 1 container Baby Arugula. Salt to taste. Put ingredients in a food processor or blender in that order. Voila! Great over pasta, on bread or as a dip for veggies!

2. Green Superfood: SunChlorella Powder

Chlorophyll. Vitamins. Minerals. Enzymes. Protein. This green algae has it all + does it all. I like the energy boost it gives me and it has a gentle cleansing effect. Mix it in with water, juice or a smoothie. It will change the color of your drink + change your day.

3. Juice Bar item: Bri’s Morning Scramble

Three letters: OMG. As a brunch-loving vegan I’ve had many tofu scrambles over the years. Ours is one is the best I’ve eaten, seasoned to perfection. Top with some OrganicVille Sriacha for a spicy twist.

4. Savory snack: Alive & Radiant Foods Kale Chips

If you’re not already on the kale bandwagon these tasty snacks will get you there. Raw, vegan + guilt free they are the perfect substitution for more calorie-laden fried potato chips! My favorite flavor is Quite Cheezy, made “cheezy” with nutritional yeast and cashews.

5. Sweet snack: Lulu’s Raw Maca Butter Cups

The delicious combination of raw chocolate, almond butter paired with maca root… yum!

6. Tea: Daily Detox Tea

It keeps my blood, liver, kidneys, skin and lymphatic system clean + clear. It has a pleasant taste and can be enjoyed hot or iced.

7. Beverage: Taste Nirvana Coconut Water

Made from sweet Thai coconuts, this is the by far the sweetest and most  flavorful coconut water on the market. It is also packaged in glass rather than plastic.

8. Supplement: Natural Factors PharmaGABA

It keeps me calm and focused without causing drowsiness. These chewable wafers begin to work in just 15 minutes and the effects are long lasting.

9. Face + Body: John Masters Argan Oil

If you want your body to feel silky + smooth Argan Oil, also known as Moroccan oil, is the answer.

10. Hair Care: Giovanni 50/50 Balanced Conditioner

Here’s my secret to great curls: I leave in regular conditioner. Traditionally leave-in conditioner is just watered down conditioner. For super curly hair I need a super moisturizing super natural full strength conditioner.

Thanks for the wonderful tips, Tanya!

5 cool new products we love!

Our buyers are always on the look out for great new items to add to our selection, and as a result we get in dozens of new products every month! Here are some recent highlights! Have suggestions on items you’d like to see on our shelves? We’d love to hear from you! Email us at info at perelandranatural dot com.

Punk Rawk Labs Nacho Cheese

Punk Rawk Lab’s Vegan Nacho Nutmilk Cheese will truly blow your mind. Vegans and non-vegans alike love this tangy, creamy spread because it’s fermented like real cheese and retains that savory, umami taste. This is the newest addition to their selection of nutmilk cheeses, and with just a little bit of heat from jalapenos it will help you make the best nachos you’ve ever had! Of course, it is very creamy and spreadable and goes great on crackers or on bread for a spicy grilled cheese, too. And, because it’s made from cashews, it’s free of cholesterol and saturated fats! You can’t say that about regular nacho cheese!

Steaz Organic Iced Green Tea with Coconut Water

While it’s not really the best time of the year for iced beverages, what with the “polar vortex” and all, Steaz had the brilliant idea to combine two of our favorite beverages – organic green tea and coconut water! Coconut water is rich in hydrating magnesium and potassium, and it’s natural sweetness and mild coconut flavor is a match made in heaven with anti-oxidant rich green tea. It’s super refreshing and is a great post-workout beverage. It’s delicious warmed up, too!

Yossi’s Vegan Cake

Yossi’s Vegan Cakes are made locally in New York City by hand and come in amazing flavors like organic chocolate chip, coconut chocolate chip, banana walnut and pumpkin spice. They’re moist, delicious and just the right amount of cake when you want a little something sweet. They’re made with organic ingredients, and like the name says, they’re free of animal products, too!

The Vegg Vegan Egg Substitute

This is one of the most interesting products we’ve ever seen here at Perelandra, and we’ve seen a lot of them over the years! The Vegg is a simple blend of fortified nutritional yeast, sodium alginate (a seaweed derived thickener) and black salt. The black salt gives it an authentic eggy flavor that will give you the eggy taste you crave with none of the cholesterol. Our supplement buyer, Meredith, and long time vegan says: “It tasted so incredibly authentic that it was frightening! I poured it over a tofu scramble and my husband thought I was making real eggs!” If you like eggs but don’t want to eat them regularly for health or ethical reasons, give The Vegg a try. It’s really neat!

Deep Steep Dry Oil Body Spray

This is the remedy you’ve been looking for to repair your winter parched skin! This dry oil spray is made of pure plant oils, like coconut, pomegranate and apricot kernel oils, but magically absorbs into your skin without leaving an oily film. You can get dressed immediately after you apply it with no worry of the oil staining, unlike traditional body oils. They come in great scents (made from natural sources- no artificial fragrances here) like lavender chamomile, honeydew spearmint, bergamot grapefruit and rosemary mint.

The Evan Healy Skin Care line was created by aestetician Evan Healy. Her holistic approach to skin care draws from traditional plant lore, aromatherapy, ayurveda, and homeopathy. Evan has borrowed from the wisdom of nature utilizing many certified organic ingredients such as nourishing nut and seed oils, herbal extracts, homeopathically prepared flower essences, pure plant hydrosols, and fresh, steam-distilled essential oils to create her cleansing milks, werums, creams, emulsions, butters, and natural clays.

Her holistic, successful and long-term solution is to support the totality of skin functions using simple plant-based formulations and non-invasive treatment methods.  This encourages the skin, with its innate ability to regulate itself, to breathe.  Evan Healy Skin Care heals, repairs, refreshes, and regenerates a wide variety of skin conditions from oily, sensitive and blemished to dry, dehydrated, inflamed and delicate…and all of the subtle nuances that lay between.  Learn more about Evan’s approach to skin care by visiting her website.

Perelandra’s Picks: Evan Healy Holistic Skin Care

When choosing new items for our health and beauty department, we look for products with high quality ingredients that are made without artificial colors, preservatives or other unnecessary chemical additives. Beauty products made with organic ingredients are a big plus, and we also look for products that are cruelty-free and produced without animal testing.

Perelandra tries products from every line that we sell before we decide whether or not we want to sell it.  We often give samples to our staff members and cosmetologist to try as well, so our decision is heavily based on our experience with the product.

We also aim to offer a variety of skin care lines so that we have products that will meet the needs of anyone who comes in. If you have dry skin, combination skin, oily skin, acne prone skin, sensitive skin, easily irritated/reddened skin, have eczema or psoriasis, we have products that will address your particular condition and have licensed professionals on staff to help you find the right product for your specific needs.

Perelandra is a big fan of Evan Healy skin care. The products are formulated by Evan Healy, an esthetician, and are focused on promoting skin health by supporting your skins natural function and balance rather than interfering with acids or other chemical exfoliants.

They use many organic ingredients in their products and take great care with the manufacture of their essential oils and hydrosols. They smell great (especially the whipped shea butter and the lemon-thyme hydrosol) and have a really great feel on the skin. Our VP of Operations is a huge fan of the tea tree oil cleanser and lemon thyme hydrosol and finds them to be a great match for her combination-oily skin.

Evan Healy

Evan Healy

In 1986 Evan trained as an aesthetician in the US, and with a European-based organization already using bio-dynamically grown Demeter-certified herbs, flowers, plants and homeopathic remedies in their skin and body care products.  In 1988 she opened a private practice in San Diego specializing in holistic treatments for skin and body.  Her approach, based on holistic and naturopathic principles, challenges some of society’s fundamental beliefs relating to beauty, aging and care of the skin.  Her philosophy is founded on the premise that the less you interfere with the skin’s own ability to achieve balance, the better.

Her postgraduate work has included in-depth study with European aromatherapits Malte Hozzel, PhD and Deitrich Gumbel, PhD and in the US, aromatherapist Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD.  She is a student of Dr. Vasant Lad of the Ayurvedic Institute, Albuquerque; she has traveled to India to study Ayurveda in its birthplace.  Evan is a graduate of the International Dermal Institute, Los Angeles, and has a diploma from the British Institute of Homeopathy, Bach Flower Therapy.

In 1999 she co-founded the EvanHealy brand of skin and body care products featuring simple plant-based, certified organic ingredients.  She sources plant material directly from snakk, regional farms in various parts of the world:  a widow’s group in Ghana provides her with raw, unbleached shea butter at fair-trade prices; family-owned farms in Washington, Oregon and California are sources for organic  hydrosols and nourishing plant, seed and nut oils, and self-governed winen’s cooperatives in Morocco are responsible for sustainably harvested argan oil.

Eden’s Beauty Picks for Summer!

Hi, Pals and Gals–
Your friendly in-store cosmetologist here. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far!  I recently had the honor of contributing to Organic Spa Magazine’s Blog with several picks for my favorite summer beauty products.  You can check out the first five items on my list on Organic Spa’s site, and keep reading below for more of my favorites.  All products listed are available right here at Perelandra!
Stay cool and don’t forget that sunscreen!

Love & green juice,

6. Jane Iredale Tantasia Self Tanner – natural based self-tanner suitable for face and body. This product builds a gradual, natural looking tan within three days and doesn’t have the heavy chemical stink of most self tanners.  Bonus? Tantasia has a built in bronzer so you can see where you’ve applied it, ensuring streak free coverage. Wait at least 15-20 minutes for the bronzer to set in before getting dressed, running, or getting into bed with light colored sheets — color will transfer with body heat.

7. Love & Toast Fragrance in Pomme Poivre – Notes of vanilla orchid, White musk and notes, Ebony woods punctuate this interesting fragrance.  It’s well-balanced and neither too sweet nor too musky, and doesn’t overpower the senses but does intrigue them.

8. Iwilla Remedy Bug Off Herbal Insect Repellent – I know bug spray isn’t necessarily an item you’d readily identify as a “beauty product” but really, is there anything uglier in the summer than limbs covered in red, itchy bumpy bug bites? Mosquitoes love me and I generally hate the smell of bug spray, but this natural insect repellent actually has a light citrus scent with just hints of the citronella and apple cider vinegar base coming through.  I met Selima, who is the founder of Iwilla, here at Perelandra when she came in for a demo and hearing about her success with using this formula while traveling all over the world, I picked up a bottle to take on my own vacation and was wowed with the invisible bug shield it seemed to provide.

9. Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Clay Mask – I love clay masks in the summertime to keep my pores clear and breakouts at bay. Try mixing this mask with Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Toner and apply to a freshly cleansed and lightly steamed face (if you’re too lazy to steam over a sink full of hot water, just apply after a hot shower) and zap all of the impurities and extra oil away!

10. SpaRitual Vegan Nail Polish – This “Big Three Free” nail polish from Orly provides good coverage in just a single coat and dries to a nice, shiny finish that is highly chip resistant.  The shorter brushes provides greater control for a neater application and the bottles are recyclable/made from up to 50% recycled materials.  Expect long wear and a wide selection of colors–way to keep those tootsies flip flop ready!
