Black Lives Matter

Perelandra supports the Black Lives Matter movement, and we stand against police brutality, racism, and oppression. We share in the grief and rage over the horrific killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and countless others. We deeply support the dismantling of the racist structures, policies, and institutions that have existed in this country since its inception. We encourage the efforts of our fellow New Yorkers to call on our country and politicians to face and address the centuries of systemic racism that Black Americans and other people of color have been subjected to. We see you, we support you, and we recognize that words are not enough. Here is what Perelandra is doing to help advance racial justice and support our community:

We have made $1000 donations to the Communities United Against Police Brutality, Colin Kaepernick's Know Your Rights Camp, and The Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective. Additionally, we are matching staff donations to anti-racist organizations of their choice, up to $5000, and we will be giving 100% of the profits of our monthly smoothie specials to Anti-Racist organizations that will be chosen by vote of our staff for the next 12 months.

We celebrate the legacy of food justice, education, and medicine maintained within Black communities, especially here in Brooklyn. To support the continued efforts of POC in food and nutrition space, we are establishing an annual college internship stipend to support POC studying food and nutrition at Brooklyn College.

To support our staff, we have adjusted our Paid Time Off policy to award more paid time off earlier, and are encouraging our staff to take the time that they need to be away from work, to take care of themselves and their communities. We have offered our staff Paid Volunteer Time for more than a decade, and have increased the number of paid volunteer hours available. We are offering staff the option of using it to support activism and attend protests. We are engaging in an open dialogue about what we can do to best support one another and our community, now and going forward.

Forty-four years ago, Perelandra was founded on the Buddhist concept of Right Livelihood. To us, this means making a living while honoring and respecting people and the natural world, and thinking deeply and critically about the impact of our decisions. We hope you will join us in thinking deeply and critically about how we can work towards creating a more just and equitable world. We welcome your feedback.
